Tips On Driving in Heavy Rain
Spring is well on its way and aren’t we looking forward to it! However, with the season, usually come April showers, so it’s important to be prepared for driving in wet weather.
People often don’t take into account that driving in the rain is a lot more different than driving in fair weather conditions. It’s easy to forget, but when it’s raining, you need to think about a range of things before you begin your journey, as well as whilst driving.
Before you set off
It’s best to take extra precautions before your journey to make sure that you and your vehicle are fully prepared for potentially hazardous conditions.
- Check that your windscreen wipers are functioning properly. It’s essential that you get them replaced if these aren’t to the correct standard
- Take a look at your fuel gauge to see if you have an ample amount of fuel. You’ll be using your lights and heater more and you may be caught in traffic, so fill up!
- Make sure your phone is fully charged just in case you need to contact someone if you encounter any issues
- Plan your journey and take care to avoid areas that are prone to flooding. Also allow yourself more time for factors such as congestion and slow speeds
- Is your journey important? If it isn’t, can it be delayed until after the rain has stopped?
Whilst driving
- Your visibility will be impaired whilst driving in the rain, so switch on your dipped headlights. This will not only help you see, but make sure that you’re seen by other drivers
- Switch on your front and rear defoggers to keep your windows clear
- Be aware of large or fast-moving vehicles that could create spray, as this can also reduce your visibility
- Reduce your speed as well as the space between you and the car in front to allow longer stopping distances
- Listen out for weather and road updates that can inform you of any road closures or flooding
- Lower your speed and take it easy when driving through standing water. This will prevent your tyres losing grip of the road. Follow this also when driving through deep water to avoid damages to your car
- Are you ready for a long journey? If you’ve had lack of sleep or feeling unwell, it’s best to delay your travels until you feel up to driving
It’s so important to drive extra safe and be considerate of other people around you, including, motorists, pedestrians and cyclists. Check your vehicle to ensure everything is in working order and be aware of your surroundings throughout your travels, so you arrive at your destination safely.
